I don’t spend too much time in Finder, moving files around. Or for that matter, in many other applications. Being in Academics though, when I do have to move things, it’s usually after I’ve downloaded plenty of PDFs that need to be sorted, and fed into Bookends (my Reference Manager), and Devonthink Pro Office. So it might not happen that often, but when it does, I move plenty.
Whereas both the above allow different means of doing that automatically, through Folder Actions, I prefer to maintain hands-on control, to ensure that the files are name according to how I prefer. This is where I used Yoink the most. Select the files, and the ‘landing zone’ appears, drop them in. Navigate to my Academics folder, and drop them there. Easy.
Along the way, I can navigate between different folders, and add other files as well. Using Command or Option, I can control if I want to MOVE or COPY the files. I can even choose to create an Alias (using Cmd+Opt). Again, nothing that cannot be done with already-existing features inside Finder/OS X, but Yoink provides a VISUAL means to keep track of what is being moved, which is very useful when I am doing this work in batches. A nice feature is being able to ‘Quickview’ the PDFs inside Yoink, so that I can check what I’m dragging where, and the option to ‘lock’ files in place, to ensure I don’t accidentally drag a file somewhere that I shouldn’t, until I decide to unlock it.
Another ‘feature’, is being able to drag text snippets around between nvAlt and the like – or images. Really anything. Its $5 – and I’ve only ever received quick and friendly support from the Developer. I gladly recommend it.
