Yoink - Better Drag and Drop App Reviews

Can’t imagine life without Yoink

I had originally downloaded Yoink on a whim, but time and time again it has proven to be incredibly useful under a variety of situations. If your screen is covered with open windows, Yoink will make the task of moving items around much easier. It’s a great tool for quickly sharing screenshots in Slack. Simply drag from Desktop to Yoink, then shift+drop into Slack.

Great little app

I’ve used versions of this for years and find it indispensible. Nice upgrade!

Full of Awesome Sauce!

I picked up this app on a whim in hopes of further improving my workflow. It’s nothing short of fantastic! In my role, I collaborate with others on my design team to develop artwork and images for an online store. Yoink provides a quick and easy means for me to collect a number of images and move them between other collaboration tools such as Dropbox and Trello - then posting final versions to our website. There are some minor tweaks and feature requests that I will suggest to the developer offline. Wouldn’t dare risk others thinking they are in some way critical of this great little gem. This little app certainly has paid for itself very quickly.

Brilliant

Talk about a simple, elegant solution to a problem everyone has encountered and no one has fixed. I couldn’t be happier with this app.

Handiest utility I ever purchased

My only dislike of the Apple operating system is the way Finder works. I have tried many alternatives, but all seem to be just as useless for my particular workflow(s). Then I find Yoink! What a find. This one little utility takes all my dislikes of Finder and makes them moot points. But the real usefullness is the ability to drag almost anything to Yoink and have it be useful - address bar locations, links on pages, etc. I wish I had found this sooner! Great utility - to the point and works extremely well.

Does what it says on the box…simply and well

Great app that has been so useful on my MacBook Air. Simple, out of the way and just there when you need it. No need to drag windows around so they are in the right place before dragging files. It paid for itself immediately!

A must for your toolbox

If you have ever needed to move a file to a folder deep in the directory structure you will certainly appreciate the usefulness of Yoink. Sure, you could create another instance of Finder and move the file from one Finder window to the other, but Yoink is a much easier (and more reliable) way to accomplish the task. To use, simply drag your file(s) and/or folder(s) to the Yoink window. The Yoink window is unobtrusive and doesn’t show itself until the dragged object invades its space. This invisible window is located at the left edge of the screen by default but can be positioned at other locations. After dragging your object to the Yoink window, you will notice that the the original hasn’t actually moved. That’s the beauty of it, no action is taken until you drag the object out of the Yoink window and drop it at its new location. Only then will the file actually move. If you change your mind along the way, the operation is canceled. Incidentally, holding down the option key changes the move to a copy. The app is well done and definitly worth the price.

Love it — always getting better! :)

When I upgraded to Lion (way back when ^^) I tried out Yoink for about 20 minutes and knew I had to have it. It’s been especially useful on my laptop, where I usually can’t see my desktop. I use it every day working across folders, Desktop, external drives, and applications. In addition to files, you can drag web links, snippets, and now even color swatches into Yoink. I also like taht you can Quick View files as they sit in the Yoink window — since Yoink follows you across Desktops, this gives you access to the info in that file whever you are. Yoink can be positioned on the sides of your screen, or can be set to follow your mouse around. Have it ignore certain applications if you don’t need it (e.g. Mail, so you can drag your email around without Yoink popping up). Add a group of files to the Yoink window and control the group, or un-group them and have access to each individually. Lock a file to keep dropping it in different places (BEST feature ever!!). The Yosemite updates changed the look just a little without reducing functinality, with the added bonus of adjusting the size of the Yoink window — from full top-to-bottom, to itty bitty living space, to the old 3-item default (size; you can add more files and it scrolls), or have it adjust automatically. Yoink is an essential app for productivity. I’m thrilled that its stellar development continues! (Extra bonus — I’ve never dealt with a real bug in Yoink. Ever. So I never hesitate to update it.)

Essential App

I have been using Yoink ever since it was introduced and it has become a part of my daily workflow. It is a true solution for copying/moving files from place to place without having to juggle multiple finder windows. The developer is quick to respond to any issues you may have, and addresses them as soon as possible. I highly recommend Yoink without hesitation.

Use it every day

Since I bought this app two(?) years ago, I’ve been using it every day. It’s great.

Good but problems launching update

I have gotten really used to using Yoink. Now that its not opening up, I am missing it terribly. Its frustrating. I don’t know what the conflict is but it won’t open up. I found a back route by downloading the demo but I expect to run into problems with that because I can’t rebuy something that I have already bought <00> Not that I want to. I just want Yoink to work again!

Essential app!

I’ve used this app for years. It allows you to start a file move and then say “where do I want these?” as opposed to having to open up two finder windows first, get them oriented so that you can click and drag. Very nice, compact, intuitive.

Perfection!

If you need to drag & drop multiple files to move to another location, add to an email or reference at a later time, Yoink is the app for you! It’s incredibly minimal in it’s appearance but does exactly what it’s supposed to when summoned. This is an extremely impressive & useful app.

Essential

One of the few apps I use all the time. I forget that it’s not part of the OS and I had to download it. Great customer support too.

Simple app, great support

This application provides a convenient parking place for moving files around and collecting them. It adds a feature that is present in Pathfinder, but missing from Apple’s Finder. I tend to use pathfinder for very specific things, such as when I am doing some specific file intensive tasks, but this app runs all the time. One thing that is nice is the ability to exclude apps from causing Yoink to appear. I don’t want to drag things from mail, though I’m sure some people do. Additionally, I emailed the developer about a slowdown I was seeing when dragging a stack of large files off Yoink and he responded quickly and was very helpful.

Very simple, and very useful

I don’t spend too much time in Finder, moving files around. Or for that matter, in many other applications. Being in Academics though, when I do have to move things, it’s usually after I’ve downloaded plenty of PDFs that need to be sorted, and fed into Bookends (my Reference Manager), and Devonthink Pro Office. So it might not happen that often, but when it does, I move plenty. Whereas both the above allow different means of doing that automatically, through Folder Actions, I prefer to maintain hands-on control, to ensure that the files are name according to how I prefer. This is where I used Yoink the most. Select the files, and the ‘landing zone’ appears, drop them in. Navigate to my Academics folder, and drop them there. Easy. Along the way, I can navigate between different folders, and add other files as well. Using Command or Option, I can control if I want to MOVE or COPY the files. I can even choose to create an Alias (using Cmd+Opt). Again, nothing that cannot be done with already-existing features inside Finder/OS X, but Yoink provides a VISUAL means to keep track of what is being moved, which is very useful when I am doing this work in batches. A nice feature is being able to ‘Quickview’ the PDFs inside Yoink, so that I can check what I’m dragging where, and the option to ‘lock’ files in place, to ensure I don’t accidentally drag a file somewhere that I shouldn’t, until I decide to unlock it. Another ‘feature’, is being able to drag text snippets around between nvAlt and the like – or images. Really anything. Its $5 – and I’ve only ever received quick and friendly support from the Developer. I gladly recommend it.

Essential

While a dual window Finder is great, Yoink is nirvana. You know you want to move/copy this flle ….somewhere… Drop it into yoink and there it will stay until you decide where it has to go. Add 2..3..4.. files into Yoink. No problem. Create a new folder and then drop all the “yoink’d” files into the folder…Of course! Two files into this folder, three into that one? No problem. Want to copy, not move? yes option-drag works just fine. I set the preferences up so that the yoink window appears near the cursor as soon as I start to drag. Nice. And if it gets in the way, (power tip) F5 makes it disappear. Or appear as needed. The best apps do simple things very well, and Yoink exemplifies this.

Super usful app!

This app is so simple yet super handy. Easy to configure and even easier to use. I’ve been using it since its launch and never had issues with buggy updates. You’ll be thanking your self for buying it.

Great little app!

Yoink is the perfect example of a small utility app that does exactly what it advertises, very efficiently and with minimal intrusion. It has very quickly become an indispensable part of my workflow. I have absolutely no complaints.

Phenomenally useful

Yoink is like those telescoping magnets that you use to fish your keys out of a drain - you wonder why you bought it, then realize that it’s absolutely the most amazing little tool when the time is right. It just hangs out in your menu bar, being all unobrusive and small, but when you need to copy files between spaces, or you just don’t remember where you put that one window to drop your files, Yoink is there, saying, “It’s cool man, I got you. Just rest those files right here, I’ll keep them nice and fresh for when you find a place to drop ‘em.” Then Yoink eases out of view, smooth as can be, just chilling until it can be useful again.
